Joyous Medicine: Best Practices for a Peaceful Journey

Starting your Joyous Medicine journey with the right tools and practices can truly transform your experience. I want to be clear upfront — I’m not affiliated with Joyous or their medicine.

I’m sharing this as someone actively using it to address my own challenges, including depression, social anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, sleep apnea, lack of motivation, and even mild OCD behaviors.

Through trial and error, I’ve crafted a regimen that works for me, and I’ve realized that much of the information out there can feel incomplete or overwhelming.

For those exploring other ketamine therapies, services like Mindbloom, Wondermed, Better U, Innerwell, or Nue Life may also offer tailored approaches to support your healing journey.

My hope is that this guide provides clarity, support, and accessibility to others walking a similar path.

In the sections below, I’ll share meditations, insights, and practical tips that have made a meaningful impact on my journey.

Together, we’ll explore ways to maximize your experience in a way that feels calm, intentional, and empowering.

Update Note (January 24, 2025): I’ve recently made some updates to this guide to provide even more clarity and support. These changes include additional resources, updated information on support lines, and refined tips to enhance your healing journey. Whether you’re revisiting this post or discovering it for the first time, I hope these updates make your experience even more insightful and empowering.

Meditations to Enhance Your Joyous Medicine Practice

There are two meditations I simply can’t recommend highly enough. While the music might not be a perfect match for everyone, the progression and structure of these meditations are truly remarkable. They’ve become essential components of my Joyous Medicine practice.

To make them even more accessible, I’ve taken the time to transcribe both meditations and highlight important timecodes. I’ll share those details here so you can navigate them easily.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to fine-tune your journey, these meditations provide a framework for structure and inspiration during low-dose Joyous Medicine sessions.

They’re especially useful if you want to explore specific parts of the meditations or remix the experience to better suit your needs.

A Quick Note on Terminology:
The meditations use the term “lozenge,” while Joyous Medicine refers to their product as a “troche.” In the videos I’m sharing below, I’ve updated the captions to reflect “troche,” but the audio still says “lozenge.” Don’t let this small difference deter you — the timing and usage are very similar based on my experience. That said, always follow the guidance of the doctor prescribing your Joyous Medicine.

Timing Your Medicine: A Personal Approach

For the best results with Joyous Medicine, I’ve found that taking it on an empty stomach significantly improves absorption and enhances the overall experience.

Over time, I’ve developed a specific routine that not only optimizes the medicine’s effects but also supports my body throughout the journey.

  • Updated Practice: I’ve adjusted my routine when taking my Joyous medicine dose. Now, I take it as I press play on Guided Meditation 1 or Guided Meditation 2 & 3. Although the audio provides timing cues for taking the dose, I’ve discovered that starting earlier works better. This adjustment is due to the medication being a Troche with Joyous, which dissolves more slowly compared to a lozenge.

Important: If the medicine is taken at the very start (00:00), please ensure you don’t take another dose at the audio prompt. This is crucial to avoid any confusion or safety concerns, as someone under the influence of the medicine might mistakenly think they need to take it again. If you’re assisting someone with this medicine, kindly remind them of this to ensure their safety.

  • Key Timing Insight: Around 16 minutes and 55 seconds into the guided meditation, I spit out the Joyous Medicine into a cup as part of my practice. This timing aligns well with the meditations I follow and allows me to seamlessly integrate the process.

This timing aligns well with the meditations I follow and allows me to seamlessly integrate the process.

By aligning your routine with your body’s needs and the structure of your meditation, you can create a more intentional and impactful experience.

Always listen to your body and consult your prescribing doctor for guidance tailored to you.

Hydration and Nourishment:

  • I mindfully sip fluids to keep my body nourished and hydrated, staying connected to my well-being.
  • I enjoy Remedy Organics vegan protein drinks, packed with nourishing ingredients like almond milk, cacao, dates, maca, ashwagandha, and prebiotics — perfect for supporting your body during any session. I’m currently exploring alternatives to Walmart and Amazon for purchasing these, focusing on more local or independent retailers.
  • I enjoy sipping on Vitaminwater XXX (Acai-Blueberry-Pomegranate), allowing its blend of minerals and vitamins to replenish and hydrate my body. However, I consciously choose to drink it only before or after completing my experience with the Joyous Medicine, honoring the sacred space of the journey by avoiding any liquids during.

Additional Comforts: To elevate your session, you might consider incorporating:

Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (Burt’s Bees): Prevents dry lips, eliminating a common sensory distraction.

High-quality noise canceling headphones: For an immersive audio experience.

  • Bose QuietComfort 45 (Bose) $$$
  • Soundcore by Anker, Space One (Anker) $$
  • Soundcore by Anker, Life Q30 (Anker) $$

Eye Mask (Blissy): Perfect if your space isn’t dark enough to fully relax.

A weighted blanket, comfy blanket, or pillows to create a cozy environment.

This practice keeps me rooted and ensures my body feels supported, both during the journey and as I integrate afterward.

Tips for a Flexible and Empowering Experience

If your protocol is similar to mine (under 100mg of Joyous Medicine), remember that you’re not locked into one rigid routine. You have the freedom to shift your practice and adapt to what feels right in the moment. Here are some ways to explore your agency:

  • Try Something New: Switch up your playlist or choose a short meditation if the current one isn’t resonating.
  • Practice Box Breathing: Use this simple breathing technique to center yourself and maintain focus.
  • Experiment with Frameworks: Use the timecodes I’ve shared to craft a journey that’s uniquely yours. Whether you stick closely to the structure or deviate slightly, the goal is to create a practice that feels authentic and supportive.
